Hair Regrowth After Chemo

People who undergo chemotherapy often lose their hair. In fact, it is very common for someone who is undergone chemotherapy to lose all of the hair on their head and body. The hair will grow back, but until then, a person feels unattractive and not like themselves. If you have undergone chemotherapy and want to grow back your hair, be assured that your hair will grow back over time. In many cases, it grows back even thicker than ever.

Chemotherapy and Hair Loss

Chemotherapy consists of drugs that are powerful enough to kill cancer cells that are growing in your body. It is fortunate that chemotherapy exists because it is very successful in treating cancer. Unfortunately, one of the side effects is that the treatment kills hair cells as well. This causes the person who is undergoing chemotherapy to lose their hair.

Not everyone loses all of their hair during chemotherapy treatments. The amount of hair that you lose, or if you lose any hair, depends upon the type of chemotherapy that you undergo. It also depends upon your body chemistry. There are some people who go through chemotherapy and lose no hair while others lose all of their hair. The important thing to remember is that your hair will grow back.

Coping with Hair Loss and Chemotherapy

It will take a few months before your hair begins to grow back after chemotherapy. One way to deal with hair loss during chemotherapy is to shave your head. If your hair is falling out in clumps, it will make you feel bad each time you look in the mirror or this happens. Cut it very, very short or shave it. This way, you can feel that you have met the worst of it and are on your way to recovery.

Men seem to have a better time to adjusting to chemotherapy hair loss than women. Women, naturally, tend to feel at a loss without their hair. However, remember that the treatment is quite possibly saving your life, the hair loss is temporary and that there are cosmetic alternatives that you can use.

Wigs

Wigs are a great way to deal with hair loss during chemotherapy. Take your hair off and invest in a good wig. There are some wig companies that make wigs just for chemotherapy patients. Remember to take your wig off when you are not at home so that you can promote hair growth by exposing your scalp to air.

Scarves

Many women prefer to wear scarves during the trying months of hair loss from chemotherapy. Scarves are a bit more chic than the traditional wigs. And there are a variety of different colors, fabrics and options.
